10 Warning Signals Of Thyroid Problem

Thyroid ProblemThyroid Problem: The Thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland in the center of your neck. This the master gland that controls metabolism and BMR (Basal Metabolism Rate). The function of your thyroid gland is inter-related with every system in your body. If your thyroid is not running optimally, Then neither are you. A healthy thyroid is a necessity for a healthy and developed body. Most Women across the globe suffer from some kind of issues related to their Thyroid Problem. One out of every five women in a single family consumes regular pills to control their thyroid. I’m sure most of your mothers do suffer from a thyroid problem.

How does Your Thyroid Gland work?

Thyroid hormone production is regulated by a feedback mechanism loop between the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and the thyroid gland. Hypothalamic thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) stimulates the pituitary thyrotropin (TSH) synthesis and secretion.In turn, TSH stimulates production and release of T4 and T3 from the thyroid gland. When enough T4 is produced, it signals to TRH and TSH that there is enough hormone in circulation and not to produce more.

 

About 85% of the hormone produced by our thyroid is T4, which is an inactive form of the hormone. After T4 is made, a small amount of it is converted into T3, which is the active form of the hormone.

To make matters less complicated for you, all you got to know about the functioning of the thyroid gland is that they control the metabolism rate of the body and are governed by the other mentioned hormones released by them namely-T4, T3, TSH. Hashimoto’s syndrome is the most common form of an autoimmune thyroid condition.

10 Warning Signals Of Thyroid Problem

1. Thinning hair or hair loss

Do you notice a lot of hair on your hairbrush after combing? Have you lost your old voluminous hair? This can be an issue related to low levels of iron in your blood, which is a common cause of thyroid.

2. Trouble regulating body temperature

Do you feel when nobody else is feeling? If yes then you must go get yourself checked for thyroid.
 
3.Thinning Eyebrows
Due to thyroid issues, the outer edges of your eyebrows start to thin or completely become non-existent.

4. Diminished Brain Clarity

Even after getting enough sleep, your brain seems foggy and you forget little things often. If you are above 30, and if this a common symptom in you, then it is an alarming sign connected to thyroid.

5. Unexplained weight gain/loss

It is easier to gain weight as we age. But if you are suddenly gaining weight for no specific reason and despite not being indulging into a lot of eating, then its time you get your thyroid levels checked. 
The same goes for losing pounds after pounds even after doing a lot of eating. Both are alarming signals of thyroid imbalance.

6. Aching joints and muscles

This a symptom that comes a bit later into the picture. Due to thyroid imbalance, we lose a lot of minerals from our body. Our body becomes deficient of minerals like Iodine, Calcium, Iron etc. These play an important role in keeping the bones and muscles strong and healthy. Loss of these minerals due to thyroid imbalance lead to pain in joints and muscles.

7. Depression or Anxiety

Depression can be connected to a lot of other reasons. We all get depressed due to varied reasons. Today depression is the main cause of depleting mental health all over the world. But, with thyroid, you actually need to pay attention to your frequency of getting panic attacks. If you face unexplained depression and anxiety along with other mentioned symptoms then this might be a sign of hyperthyroidism.

8. Inability to gain or lose weight

Even after trying every diet and exercise, you see negligible improvement in your figure, Check your thyroid! When thyroid hormones are not working well they cause havoc on your metabolism. They send signals to hold on to fats or not allow the fat to collect on your body.

9. Excess Fatigue

Do you wake up tired even after getting a good night sleep? Can you not make it through the day without taking a nap?  The cause of this excessive fatigue is thyroid imbalance which makes everything work a lot harder than it has to.

10. Tried but unable to sleep at night

This is commonly called insomnia. My mother has hyperthyroidism. She faces insomnia on most occasions and has to resort to taking pills to get a good sleep. If you face this too, its time to get serious and get a checkup done!
 
While some of these symptoms can and do indicate other issues of the body, they really are signs you have thyroid problems.

  • TSH
  • Free T4
  • Free T3
  • Reverse T3
  • Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies ( TPOAb)
  • Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TgAb)
